How to read
a peptide COA.

A step-by-step guide to matching a report to a material, understanding the fields, and keeping the right questions in view.

Start with the right report.

A Certificate of Analysis, usually shortened to COA, brings together identifying information and analytical results for a tested sample. Reading it carefully begins before you reach the result column: first establish what the document covers.

Keep the product page or label alongside the report. Record the product name, the selected quantity or variant, and any lot identifier you have. This gives you a useful reference as you work through the document.

1. Match the product and lot.

Look for the product or sample description and the lot or batch number. Compare those identifiers with the information supplied for the material you are reviewing. Similar product names do not establish that two documents refer to the same lot.

If a report uses a sample code instead of the store’s lot number, ask for clarification about that connection. Keep that explanation with the report so the record remains understandable later.

2. Identify the issuer and date.

Find the issuing laboratory, report number, and dates shown. Depending on the report, you may see separate dates for receiving the sample, performing the work, and issuing the results.

When a laboratory provides an original report link or a verification service, use the report identifier there. If you only have a cropped image, request the full document, including any notes or additional pages.

3. Read the methods and units.

Before interpreting a result, locate its test method and units. For example, a chromatographic purity percentage describes a different measurement from a quantity reported in milligrams per vial. Do not substitute one for the other.

Where a report uses shorthand, ask what it means in that laboratory’s method. Retain the stated units, rather than copying an isolated number into your notes.

4. Read results with the notes.

Review any specifications or acceptance criteria next to the result. Check the footnotes, qualifications, sample descriptions, and attached pages. A short pass/fail label is easier to understand when you know what criterion was applied.

Keep unanswered questions visible.

If the document does not list a test or explain a result, write down the question. Contact the supplier or report issuer for clarification before relying on an interpretation.

Do not transfer a conclusion from one material or lot to another without supporting information. Likewise, the listed analytical results do not by themselves establish suitability for every experiment.

5. Keep a usable research record.

Save the complete report with the product name, lot identifier, source link, and the date you accessed it. Retain any correspondence that explains sample identifiers or other ambiguities. After the material arrives, compare the delivered label with your record.

  • Product and lot match checked.
  • Issuing laboratory and report number recorded.
  • Methods, units, results, and notes reviewed.
  • Missing information or inconsistencies resolved.
  • Complete document saved with the relevant research records.
